Perhaps the most representative single collection of Johannes Meintjes’ creative output is housed in the Johannes Meintjes Memorial Room at the Molteno High School in the town of Molteno in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Formally opened on 11 April 1986, the Meintjes Room is home to a permanent exhibition of more than 70 art works by the artist. Of considerable value to a fuller appreciation of Johannes Meintjes’ prodigious talent, these art works, plus the larger part of his prestigious and valuable Africana library (2,227 books), were generously donated by Meintjes’ widow to the Molteno High School during the mid 1980’s. The intention was to promote the significant contribution made by Johannes Meintjes to South African art and to always keep alive the reputation of the artist.
A point that collectors, art historians, academics and others interested in viewing this public collection should bear in mind is that the Molteno High School housing the Johannes Meintjes Memorial Room has regrettably declined to make any images available and does not consent to any photographs of art works being taken. This includes photographs for purposes of research, compiling archives and a
catalogue raisonné for Johannes Meintjes for non-commercial, academic use on this memorial website or for non-commercial, academic use on the
Pelmama Foundation's archival website.
A visit in person to the Molteno High School is therefore required to view this important public collection (only during school hours and by prior arrangement) which has recently been described by a leading South African art historian as a 'national asset'.
